Karen’s trip to Iceland

I recently had the pleasure of traveling to Iceland for 5 nights with Regent Holidays and what a fantastic trip it was.

Iceland is a unique destination and you’ll see amazing waterfalls, ice caves, Geysers, volcanoes and the vibrant city of Reykjavik.

We started our trip exploring the famous ‘golden circle’ and travelled by Superjeep to Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Superjeep is a great way to see the best of Iceland as you have the benefit of an experienced and knowledgeable driver so really do see everything there is to see. We enjoyed the highlights of South Iceland’s natural wonders, discovering Thingvellir National Park where the first Icelandic parliament was established over 1,000 years ago. We saw the mighty Gullfoss waterfall and the Geyser geothermal field to witness Strokkur Geyser erupting into the sky. We also went snowmobiling on the Langjökull Glacier which was amazing (but a little scary!). There you will find the unique and newly opened ice cave.  The west of Iceland has beautiful fishing towns and the Kirkjufell Mountain.

A visit to the famous Blue Lagoon cannot be missed and is located just 20 mins drive from Keflavik Airport. It is one of Iceland’s top attractions. Situated in the middle of a lava field, the mineral-rich, geothermal seawater comes from holes as deep as 2,000 metres. Known for its healing qualities, the 37-39 degrees water is rich in active ingredients including algae, natural minerals and the Blue Lagoon’s signature ingredient – white silica mud.

We called in at the Laugarvatn Fontana Spa which I really enjoyed. It’s a place where you come to relax and experience authentic Icelandic nature while relaxing in the warm geothermal pools and natural steam rooms. The baths vary in depth, size and temperature and the steam rooms that have been built over natural hot springs that have been used for this purpose since 1929.

The highlight of my trip was without doubt, seeing the Northern lights. It is difficult to put in to words how truly amazing this was! I can only suggest you pop in to Spa Travel and have a chat with me about my experience; I have many photos and tips I can share.church whale super-jeep lights iceland kaz-lights waterfall sushi geyser
